To Join or Not to Join?
That
is the question…
We had a discussion at a meeting I attended recently regarding membership in the local church, and whether it was necessary for the believer. There was certainly a variance of opinions on the matter, and after some research I find that there are many folks on both sides of the issue. I think I should say here that when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we become part of God's family, and a member of the universal church, so this article is speaking only of membership in the local church. Let me share with you how The Lord is speaking to me in this matter.
Before a born-again believer considers becoming part of the body of a local church, they should be familiar with the doctrine of the church they are considering, know that the full counsel of God is being preached and taught there faithfully, the ordinances of baptism and communion are administered properly, and church discipline is practiced consistently. Among the benefits in membership for the believer is that it identifies one with Christ's people in a particular place, and encourages growth as we worship, give, and serve together in common. There is not only an expression of commitment, but also, just as when one joins any organization, there is a sense of belonging; it is no longer "their" church, it becomes "our" church. Along with membership comes voting privileges and the privilege to serve in positions of leadership. Just as in marriage one must be committed to its obligations and responsibilities, so when one joins the fellowship, they become more personally responsible for the success or failure of the Lord's work in and through that local church. Every time a church takes in new members the body is enhanced and blessed.
Is
it Scriptural? I believe God's word requires local church membership.
"Obey them that have rule over you, and submit to their
authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an
account." (Hebrews
13:17) Can this occur without membership in a local church? I
don't believe that it can.
A Christian is one committed to Christ. That being so, we should be committed to a local church He has established and there we find opportunity to worship, serve, give and express our loyalty to our Savior.
If you have been attending here for some time, and you are a believer, I hope that you would prayerfully consider becoming a member of our church. New members classes are held on Sunday afternoons on an as-needed basis. The next class is scheduled for Sunday, April 14, from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. If you have any questions in this regard or would like to sign up for the class, please contact the church office at (330) 494-3419.
